Facial Eczema 2000

Following a bad season for facial eczema in 1999 and the shortage of licensed animal remedies for treatment of affected animals, the suppliers of licensed products have been surveyed for their preparedness for this year’s facial eczema threat. Five licensees of zinc oxide animal remedies were contacted.

In general it was considered that the weather forecast indicated a likelihood for the season to be similar to last year. However, the rather recent general cooling of the weather has made predictions for the season difficult.Animals exposed to facial eczema last year will be particularly vulnerable this year, and they should be monitored and treated appropriately.

Licensees of oral zinc oxide products have taken steps to secure supplies of product, and contingency stocks have been arranged for January through to April 2000. Users of the bolus product may suffer a short fall if there is a heavy demand similar to last year.
