Antimicrobial Resistance Project

In July 2005 the Expert Panel produced a report on antimicrobial resistance that made a number of recommendations. This report was commented on and endorsed by the Antimicrobial Resistance Steering Group. In addition, NZFSA responded to the report in the document NZFSA Response to Antimicrobial Resistance Expert Panel Report and Steering Group Advice – July 2006, which is available on the website.

Some of the main recommendations in the report are:

set up of Standing Advisory/Expert Group and the development of guidance information such as resistance pathways, risk assessment principles etc.

reassessment of veterinary medicine streptomycin products

update of ACVM information requirements for antimicrobial use/restrictions

development of a system for collecting and publishing use information from antimicrobial annual sales data

reassessment of streptomycin use in horticulture.

The ACVM Group is working on a project to implement the recommendations as agreed in the NZFSA position document. This project will determine priorities and actions required to implement the recommendations, and it is expected that there will be a staged implementation. Details on the implementation process will be notified as they are developed.
