Codex Committee for Residues in Veterinary Drugs

The next Codex Committee for Residues in Veterinary Drugs (CCRVDF) will be held in Colorado from 2 - 7 September. New Zealand's primary objective at the meeting will be to see the progression of the Draft Guidelines for the Design and Implementation of National Regulatory Food Safety and Assurance Programmes Associated with the Use of Veterinary Drugs in Food-Producing Animals. New Zealand took the lead in drafting this paper, which is now at step 5.

At the meeting there are likely to be proposals to disband the working group that considers priorities for drugs requiring evaluation. The alternative proposal is to achieve this prioritisation work electronically prior to CCRVDF meetings.

The working group on residues of veterinary drugs without acceptable daily intakes (ADIs)/maximum residue limits (MRLs) continues to make slow progress on developing alternative ways to consider the risk assessment of older drugs and to set alternative acceptable limits. The focus has been on identifying drugs that do not have MRLs and considering proposals for 'banned' lists. There will be attempts to direct the work into developing ways of doing the risk assessments without requiring the generation of complete new toxicological data packages for drugs that have been commonly used worldwide for decades.
