Antimicrobial Resistance Management
Most subprojects to implement the various recommendations of the Expert Panel's report on antimicrobial resistance are underway.
Reassessment
The subproject on reassessment of aminoglycoside veterinary medicines is progressing. The formal reassessment will commence shortly. The registrants have been given an opportunity beforehand to indicate their likely intentions of supplying supporting data, modifying labels, or withdrawing the product(s) from the marketplace.
The reassessment of the one streptomycin pesticide has become rather more complicated. The registrant and industry have now concluded that the recommendation in the report to remove the tomato seedling claim is not justified and they are gathering data to support this position. The registrant also wishes to expand the use of the product to other seedling crops. NZFSA has considered these matters and agrees there is justification for the position in relation to tomato seedlings and other uses, providing the data supports this.
Surveillance programme
The working group created to consider establishing a surveillance programme meets monthly and has agreed to terms of reference and objectives. At the present rate of progress, the group’s report and recommendations should be presented to the NZFSA Board in October, two months ahead of schedule.
Once NZFSA makes a decision, a discussion document with indicative costings and funding proposals could then be completed for consultation with interest groups.
