ACVM Act Update: Progress Report
As noted in the previous issue of AgVetLink, NZFSA has begun updating the implementation of the amended Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997.
NZFSA initially discussed its proposed reform of the ACVM Act with the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Advisory Council (AVMAC). Following this, three days of meetings with stakeholders were held in Auckland and Wellington. These meetings, which began with a general overview of the proposed reform, also included sessions targeted at specific product groups, providing an opportunity for NZFSA to clarify any areas of concern for likely affected parties.
After meeting with industry, NZFSA met with certain key government departments. It is now in the process of working with these agencies on the proposed reform. Because the scope of the ACVM Act has the potential to overlap with the work of other agencies, it is critically important to clarify these areas of interface before moving ahead with public consultation. NZFSA is aiming to ensure that it does not duplicate the work of other government agencies – and that the reform of the ACVM Act does not impose any unnecessary additional costs on businesses.
