Amendment 8: Manual 16

Date: 28 February 2008

1 Background

At the request of Industry, NZFSA has assessed the examination requirements for bovine lungs and for lamb diaphragms where Taenia ovis is detected. This assessment has resulted in the following changes:

1.1 Remove the recording and carcass re-examination requirement when T. ovis is detected in lamb diaphragms and add guidance for the collection of data via Ovis Management Ltd to enable control and management of T. ovis on farm; and

1.2 Remove the incision requirements for cattle lung examination (edible and inedible) in Manual 16 appendix 3 Inspection table; and

1.3 Add extra incision and examination requirements of all the apical, bronchial, and mediastinal lymph nodes for reactor cattle (i.e. approximately 2-3 mm incisions and careful examination of the cortex of lymph nodes) into Manual 16 appendix 3 notes table; and

1.4 A small alteration to the note number in Manual 16 appendix 3 notes table to maintain the current requirements for bobby calf edible lung examination.

1.5 A correction to remove the note for pizzle (e) in Manual 16 appendix 3 notes table to align it with inspection requirements for pizzle (e) in Manual 16 appendix 3 Inspection table.

2 Amendment Details

2.1 Manual 16 is amended by deleting section 6.5 and inserting the following section:

“6.5 Sheep and Lambs

Where T. ovis (C. ovis) cysts or Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) lesions are detected anywhere in the viscera of the sheep (other than lambs), the carcass is to be diverted to the detain rail and the appropriate disease is to be recorded.

Lambs
To ensure consistency of data to enable the control and management of Taenia ovis (sheep measles) at farm level, Ovis Management Ltd requests that for lambs, findings of T. ovis lesions in the diaphragm and heart be recorded against the carcass of lambs. This is likely to involve notification from viscera examiners to carcass examiners who will ticket the carcass but not send the carcass to the detain rail. The company grader will then enter the data against the carcass and the farm. It will be up to the operator, AsureQuality and NZFSA staff at each premises to agree on the ticketing process.”

2.2 Major alterations/changes to Manual 16 appendix 3 Inspection table and associated notes table are highlighted in the text of the amendment.
