Honey Labelling Requirements
Honey packers are increasingly asked by customers to declare compliance with the new labelling requirements of the Food Standards Code.
Customers also seek information from packers as to when they will have a HACCP based food safety programme in place. A HACCP based risk management programme (RMP) will meet these needs. Supermarkets have indicated that they expect all suppliers to be working towards this goal. NZFSA is currently developing a template programme to assist packers meet this requirement and thus ensure the fitness for purpose of their products.
The following information has been prepared to assist packers of honey meet the new labelling requirements. It applies to a standard retail pack of honey – although the warning requirement for honey when combined with royal jelly and sold as a food, is emphasised. See the disclaimer below. If you are making nutritional claims (e.g. "Low in fat") then requirements become more complex and you should seek further advice.
