Animal Material or Products Taken by Travellers Going Abroad

The NZFSA do not regularly check the personal import requirements of foreign governments.

These requirements are subject to change and variations in interpretation by the authorities. NZFSA (Animal Products Group) cannot accept responsibility for errors in this information.

Australia

Full certification is recommended for meat and seafood, unless the product is in tamperproof packaging with the NZFSA inspection legend.

EU countries

Meat and meat products for personal use entering the European Union must not exceed 1 kg in weight.

The meat and meat products must be accompanied by at least an animal health export certificate of the type appropriate to the particular product as specified in other notifications under the Animal Products Act.

These requirements do not apply to infant food or special foods for medical reasons, under the conditions that these products do not require refrigeration before opening, that they are packaged proprietary brand products for direct sale to the final consumer, and that the packaging is unbroken unless in current use.

This section applies also to personal exports of meat and meat products.

Canada

Up to 10 kg of meat or meat product with full certification. Canned meat is exempt certification.

Cook Islands

A package (eg keg or 22.7 kg carton) of fresh meat or canned meat, admitted without certification.

Fiji

Full certification or the passenger pack certificate for meat and meat products.

French Polynesia

4 kg of Meat and meat products without certification.

Hong Kong

Import permits are required for meat and meat products in quantities over 15kg, and for all meat from wild game. Full certification or the passenger pack certificate is also required.

Japan

Full certification or passenger pack certificate for meat and meat products. Jerky may be admitted if the packaging displays the inspection legend.

Niue

A package (eg keg or 22.7 kg carton) of fresh meat or canned meat, admitted without certification.

Norfolk Is

As for Australia.

Singapore

10 kg of meat and meat products with full certification or passenger pack certificate, hand-carried on direct flight or via Australia.

Taiwan

Full certification or passenger pack certificate recommended for meat and meat products.

USA

22.7 kg of meat or meat products without certification.

Western Samoa

A package (eg keg or 22.7 kg carton) of fresh meat or canned meat, admitted without certification.

Some markets require a CITES Exemption certificate for meat from wild game. These are issued by the Department of Conservation.
