Consultation on the discussion paper “Tutin in honey”

31 October 2008

Dear Interested Party

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) is beginning public consultation on a proposed new food standard that will set a maximum level for tutin in honey. The period in which written submissions will be accepted closes at 5.00pm on Friday 28 November 2008. Unfortunately due to time constraints late submissions will not be accepted.

Please see attached for your information copies of the draft proposed standard and NZFSA’s public discussion paper “Tutin in honey”. These documents have been developed as a result of work done since the 22 cases of poisonings from tutin in honey that occurred in March 2008.

Given the main impact of the proposed standard is across the North Island and top of the South Island, NZFSA will hold six public meetings in these areas during November 2008 as part of its consultation on the discussion paper and the proposed standard. These will be held as follows:

NZFSA will take what submitters and interested parties have to say into consideration in developing the final standard that will be recommended to the Minister of Food Safety for issue under the Food Act 1981. It is intended that the proposed Food (Tutin in Honey) Standard 2008 be implemented by 1 January 2009.

Yours sincerely

Carol Barnao
