07 April 2005

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority is hosting a number of workshops throughout the country in advance of the 1 July 2005 deadline for egg producers to register their risk management programmes (RMPs) with NZFSA. The workshops will provide an open forum for question and answer sessions and discussion on RMPs for affected egg producers. The workshops will take place at the following places and dates:

North Island:

Tuesday 26 April: Palmerston North: The Awatea Park Hotel & Conference Centre,

243 Fitzherbert Avenue

Friday 29 April: Pukekohe: Karakara Lodge, Bream Revel Way, off Lewis Road, Karaka

Tuesday 3 May: Whangarei: Dickens Inn, Cameron & Quality Streets

Wednesday 4 May: Hamilton: Hamilton Airport Motor Inn & Conference Centre, Airport Road

Tuesday 10 May: Hastings: Lowe House & Conference Centre, L2 304 Fitzroy Ave

South Island:

Wednesday 27 April: Christchurch: Hotel Grand Chancellor, 161 Cashel Street

Friday 6 May: Nelson: The Rutherford Hotel, Trafalger Square

All workshops will run from 10.00am to 3pm. There is no charge for participants.

Legislation surrounding egg production was transferred from the Food Act to the Animal Products Act in 1999. New regulatory requirements have been brought in that require all primary egg producers to register their risk management programmes (RMPs) with NZFSA by 1 July 2005.

(Those producers who pay the egg commodities levy had until July 2004 to register their programme.)

NZFSA announced in March that egg producers with flocks of 100 female birds or less, and who sell all their eggs directly to consumers, are to be exempt from the requirement to have an RMP.

The exemption does not apply to producers with 100 female birds or less who sell on to intermediaries such as dairies, bakers and petrol stations.

A “Risk Management Programme Template for Eggs” has been developed by NZFSA which takes into account issues identified through the Egg Producers Federation of New Zealand Working Group. The template will assist egg producers to prepare a risk management programme (RMP) for registration of a single business RMP under the Animal Products Act 1999.

To attend any of these workshops please register with NZFSA by contacting Dee Hicks, phone 04 463-2625, fax 04 463 2643 or email dee.hicks@nzfsa.govt.nz

Further information on requirements for eggs is available on the NZFSA website http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/animalproducts/subject/rmp/index.htm
