Soy-Based Infant Formula
Soy protein has been used as a substitute for cows’ milk protein since the turn of the century and soy-based infant formulas have been available in New Zealand for a number of years.
Many plants, including soy beans, contain substances called phytoestrogens. Soy beans are a rich source of phytoestrogens as is soy-based infant formula. The long-term effects of phytoestrogens in soy-based formula as an infant's main food source are not known. However, there is ongoing international research under way in this area. In 2003 the independent scientific Committee on Toxicity (COT) published a report on the possible health implications of phytoestrogens in our diet; and in 2006 the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition Committee (ESPGHAN) published a position paper on soy protein infant and follow-on formula.

The New Zealand Ministry of Health do not recommend soy-based formula for general use in infant feeding. The only medical indication for soy-based formula is for managing galactosaemia. Soy-based formula contains no lactose and cows’ milk protein, but formula are available in New Zealand for infants with cows’ milk protein allergy and lactose intolerance, and these formula are recommended in preference to soy-based infant formula. Soy-based formula is an appropriate option only for vegan infants if they are not breastfed. If, however, you have been advised by your doctor or health professional to use soy-based infant formula for your baby then you should continue to do so.
Breast milk is internationally recognised as the best food for infants. The New Zealand Ministry of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding until around six months of age, with continued breastfeeding until 12 months or beyond.
The Ministry of Health provides further information for parents and health practitioners about breastfeeding, and the use of soy-based and milk-based infant formula.
