Food safety and the New Zealand public 2007 survey

3 Interest in and Knowledge of Food Safety Issues

Declared interest in food safety issues fell slightly in the 2007 survey. 53% of New Zealanders now claimed to be interested in food safety (‘1’or ‘2’ on a 5 point scale where 1 meant very interested), compared with 57% in 2005 and 58% in 2003. 64% of those who said that they had to watch what they eat for health reasons rated their interest as either a ‘1’or a ‘2’, compared with 38% of those who said that they often had takeaways.

In line with the slippage in declared interested in food safety issues, the number who said that they would be interested in getting information on food safety also fell (down 4% to 62%).

On the other hand, declared knowledge of food safety issues remained steady (60% ‘a lot’ or ‘a fair amount’, up 1% since 2005).
