Food safety and the New Zealand public 2007 survey
10 Wild Foods
23% of respondents said that they hunted, fished or otherwise gathered food from the wild. Demographic groups relatively likely to say that they did this included blue collar workers (46%), Māori (40% of n=81) and males (33%). By comparison, only 13% of Wellingtonians (n=78), 14% of females and 17% of vegetarians/ vegans (n=48) said that they gathered food from the wild. 45% of those who gathered wild food said that they would be interested in receiving information on the safety of the foods that they caught/ gathered (1or 2 on the 5 point scale where 1 meant very interested). This is actually a reasonably low number for this sort of question, and is in line with the same group’s reaction to the idea of receiving general information on food safety, where 47% said that they were interested in this sort of information compared with 53% of all respondents.
INTERESTED IN RECEIVING INFORMATION ON THE SAFETY OF WILD FOODS [Respondents who said that they hunt, fish or gather food from the wild were asked:] Using a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 means very interested and 5 not interested at all, how interested would you be in receiving information on the safety of foods that you hunt, fish or gather wild?

Base: 45% of respondents who said that they hunt, fish or gather food from the wild AND were interested in receiving information about the food they collect from the wild, [n=78]
Asked to identify their most preferred option for receiving information on the safety of wild foods, respondents were split between articles/ advertisements in daily newspapers, an official website and articles/ advertisements in hunting and fishing magazines. The first two options were each preferred by 25% of hunters/ fishers, while 24% preferred articles or advertisements in hunting and fishing magazines. Given that relatively few people chose email alerts as an option they would consider, the number identifying this as their single preferred option is reasonably substantial (19%).
INFORMATION SOURCES ON WILD FOODS – MOST PREFERRED SOURCE FOR RECEIVING INFORMATION [Respondents who said that they hunt, fish or gather food from the wild AND were interested in receiving information on food safety on the food they collect from the wild AND had chosen more than one option on how they would like to receive information OR had only chosen only one option:] [Those who had chosen more than one option we asked:] And which ONE would you be most likely to use?
