ICMSS07 will be exploring new developments in all aspects of shellfish safety through oral presentations, posters and Round Table discussions. The Conference Scientific Committee is particularly interested in addressing the following themes and topics:

1. Early warning systems

Microbial monitoring.

Neural networks.

Remote sensing.

Real time microbiological and marine biotoxin monitoring.

Modelling and forecasting.

2. Shellfish microbiology

Detection and management of pathogenic Vibrios.

Virus localisation in shellfish.

Virus extraction and assay methods, particularly novel non-PCR based methods.

Bacterial and parasitic (e.g. Cryptosporidium, Giardia) infections.

Progress with viral indicator and surrogate organisms.

Microbial source tracking.

Emerging pathogens.

Prevalence and persistence of viral pathogens.

3. Post harvest treatment

Depuration.

Relaying.

High pressure processing.

Heat treatment systems.

Radiation.

Novel detoxification approaches for contaminated shellfish.

4. Analytical methods

The role of validation in the approval and implementation of new screen and reference methods.

Proficiency and inter-laboratory studies.

The use and public health significance of PCR methods.

ISO 17025 for every method used on regulatory samples.

The future of the mouse bioassay for AZP, OA, NSP & PSP.

Replacement methods for mouse bioassay methods.

Allergies to shellfish consumption.

Investigation and epidemiology related to shellfish-borne illness outbreaks.

6. Phycotoxins

Freshwater toxins (e.g. microcystins) in shellfish.

International changes in the regulation of marine biotoxins.

OECD Guide 425 & oral toxicity studies for shellfish toxins.

Toxic effects of the ingestion of shellfish containing multiple toxin groups.

The effects of cooking, processing, freezing on phycotoxin levels in shellfish.

WTO equivalence in shellfish safety control programmes.

The development and branding of quality standards/marks shellfish industries.

Call for Abstracts

Thank you for your abstracts. The poster and oral abstract submission is now closed.

Guideline for Oral and Poster Presentations

Abstracts must be submitted for all oral and poster presentations.

Time allowed for oral presentations is 15 minutes plus 5 for discussion and questions.

Abstracts must be written in 9 point in Arial, listing all authors with affiliations, postal and e-mail addresses and centrally aligned– with the presenting author underlined. Abstracts must not exceed 200 words.

The presenting author must indicate the preference of the work as a poster or oral presentation.

All abstracts must be submitted by e-mail using the Conference Form available by clicking the link 'Abstract Submission Form' below.

Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee and assigned to poster or oral presentation.

Abstracts will only be accepted when the presenting author has completed registration.

Poster size is 1.2m x 1.1m.

Conference proceedings containing accepted oral and poster papers will be published and made available to all participants as part of the registration. Full manuscripts of oral presentations will be peer reviewed.

Early registration deadline 1st December 2006

Abstract authors notified of selection 15th December 2006

Late registration deadline 1 February 2007

Round Table Discussions

The Scientific Committee expect that 3 focused Round Tables will be included in the Conference programme. Topics suggested to date are: test method validation, proficiency testing and inter-laboratory studies; practical management procedures for pathogenic viruses; and international agreement on which shellfish toxins must be regulated. Suggestions on these or other possible roundtable themes would be appreciated. Please contact phil.busby@nzfsa.govt.nz.
