NZFSA's Listeria monocytogenes risk management strategy
Listeria monocytogenes risk management strategy
Although the incidence of foodborne listeriosis is rare, about 25 cases annually, the severity of the illness is such that NZFSA has identified Listeria monocytogenes as a high priority. NZFSA has developed a Listeria monocytogenes risk management strategy to meet its performance target of achieving ‘no increase in reported incidence of foodborne listeriosis after five years’.
Listeria monocytogenes risk management strategy 2008-2011
Objectives of the Listeria monocytogenes risk management strategy
The key objectives of the strategy are to:
• achieve no increase in foodborne human listeriosis cases.
• engage with industry, other stakeholders and consumers in order to ensure that any outcomes developed are practical, feasible and cost effective
• effectively communicate the strategy and outcomes to all stakeholders
• make well informed risk management decisions on appropriate control measures and their implementation
• design and implement an ongoing monitoring and review programme to assess the effectiveness of risk management decisions.
