List of tariff codes with NZFSA alerts
Prescribed foods are monitored at the border using the New Zealand Customs tariff code system. Import requirements for specific foods
A tariff code is an eleven character classification number used for Customs purposes to classify goods. It is ascertained in accordance with The Tariff of New Zealand. The Working Tariff Document of New Zealand is available on the Customs website under Library/Working Tariff of New Zealand.

An import agent or customs broker may be able to assist with interpretation of the tariff code.
Tariff codes with alerts will require the importer to apply for a clearance permit from NZFSA. Monitoring of prescribed foods is not limited to products with tariff code alerts.
Importers who are importing prescribed foods under tariff codes not listed below should notify NZFSA Central Clearing House. NZFSA CCH will notify NZFSA of the need to review the tariff codes targeted.
Supporting information to accompany NZFSA single use permit applications
All NZFSA Single Use Permit applications should have supporting information included. This will assist personnel at CCH to identify high risk products and process the application efficiently. Supporting information could include:
• the invoice for the consignment
• the bill of lading or air way bill for the consignment
• recognised assurances / certification (if applicable as listed in each Imported Food Requirement)
• an ingredient list and/or product specification or manufacturers declaration when applying for a Single Use Permit for clearance of sauces and soft cheeses.
Inadvertent captures
As the tariff classification system is not designed specifically around the imported food regime, some food products may be inadvertently captured by the targeted tariff codes listed. If this is the case, products will not be subject to the sampling and testing protocol outlined in these requirements. Importers may apply to NZFSA for a multiple release permit (MRP) to facilitate clearance.
