Application A600 – Agarose Ion Exchange Resin as a Processing Aid for Beer – Draft Assessment Report

14 September 2007

Project Officer Application A600
Food Standards Australia New Zealand
PO Box 10559
WELLINGTON 6036

FS360-114-600

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this application. The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) has the following comments to make.

NZFSA supports option 2 to amend Standard 1.3.3 – Processing Aids, and Standard 1.3.4 – Identity and Purity, to approve the use of agarose ion exchange resin as a processing aid to clarify and stabilise beer and provide a specification for this enzyme system.

We are satisfied that the proposed use of agarose ion exchange resin is technologically justified and that no public health or safety concerns were identified.

Yours sincerely

Carole Inkster
Director
Joint Food Standards
