Application A580 – Food Derived from Amylase Modified Corn Line 3272 – Draft Assessment Report

4 July 2007

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this application/proposal. The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) has the following comments to make.

NZFSA has had the report reviewed by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Limited (ESR). As a result of this review, we have a comment to make concerning the data provided. In general, the assessment either provides data to support the conclusions of studies, or it makes reference to studies supplied by the Applicant. In one instance neither was supplied. Specifically, the assessment (section 4.1) indicates that studies were undertaken to demonstrate that the AMY797E α-amylase is functionally equivalent in starch hydrolysis to other commercial α-amylases, but, while methods used to determine this are listed in the assessment, no data is provided nor is there reference to any publication containing the data. The assessment would be improved if such information was supplied to substantiate the claim made. The report would be strengthened if this data were included in the Final Assessment Report.

Yours sincerely
