A1006 – Food Derived from Herbicide-tolerant Soybean Line DP-356043-5 – Second Assessment Report

29 September 2009

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this application. At the Initial Assessment Report stage, the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) made a number of comments relating to the characterisation of metabolites, and the hazard assessment of glyphosate residues.

Characterisation of metabolites

NZFSA is pleased to note that section 5.6 of the Safety Assessment contained in the Second Assessment Report has been strengthened by providing additional data on the levels of acetylated amino acids in other foods, potential toxicity, and a new section on dietary modelling. NZFSA agrees that the increased levels of acetylated amino acid in soy bean line DP-356043-5 are nutritionally insignificant and raise no food safety concerns.

Hazard Assessment of Glyphosate Residues:

NZFSA agrees with FSANZ’s conclusion in the Second Assessment Report, that there is no need to change the existing MRL and residue definition relating to glyphosate on soybeans in Standard 1.4.2.

Yours sincerely
