Organics - Exporting
Market-specific export requirements - Overview
NZFSA sets market-specific export requirements for exporting organic products to countries covered by the official organic assurance programme (OOAP). This is to facilitate New Zealand exporters’ access to overseas markets. The aim is to meet or gain equivalence to the destination country’s organic standard.
Market-specific export requirements are requirements that the New Zealand government agrees upon with the government of the destination country.
You are responsible for routinely checking for any changes to regulatory or commercial requirements with your distributor or importing agent, and ensuring your exports comply.
Markets covered by the OOAP
The following markets are currently covered under the official organic assurance programme (OOAP):
• European Union
• Switzerland
• United States of America
• Japan
• Taiwan.
Markets not covered by the OOAP
NZFSA does not have agreements with any other markets. If you wish to export organic products to countries not in the list above, it is your responsibility to check and comply with their requirements.
Changes to market requirements
NZFSA will provide new market-specific export requirements or changes to existing requirements as we learn of them.
You need to sign up on the NZFSA website to receive these updates.

If market-specific export requirements are unclear, NZFSA can seek clarification from the overseas government concerned. NZFSA then informs third party agencies (TPAs) of the official clarification or interpretation. Unofficial interpretations are applied at your own risk.
Help NZFSA keep market-specific export requirements current
NZFSA strongly advises all exporters to keep NZFSA informed if they receive information about new requirements, or the way in which countries administer their requirements. This helps ensure that the market-specific export requirements are consistently valid and as up-to-date as possible. It may also provide a basis for negotiations to amend an existing requirement or establish a new one.
