Organics - Exporting

United States of America

The United States does not recognise New Zealand’s official organic assurance programme (OOAP) as equivalent to their National Organic Programme (NOP). The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) does however recognise NZFSA as an accrediting body for the National Organic Programme (NOP). NZFSA accredits third party agencies (TPAs) to manage compliance to the NOP. If you export organic foods to the United States under the official organic assurance programme (OOAP), they must be produced in accordance with the USDA NOP.

USDA – National Organic Program

Products that comply with the USDA National Organic Programme may display the USDA organic seal. You can apply the USDA organic seal in New Zealand, under the oversight of your third party agency (TPA).

You must notify NZFSA of all consignments of organic products you export to the United States under the OOAP. You do this by completing the following form for each consignment.

Export certificate application form

Check with your TPA whether you need a certificate to accompany your consignment of organic products to the United States.
