Organics - Exporting

Japan

If you are exporting organic products to Japan, you have two options:

export under NZFSA’s official organic assurance programme (OOAP)

export through a third party agency (TPA) that is registered with the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).

Export under NZFSA’s official organic assurance programme (OOAP)

If you are planning to export organic plant products or processed foods of plant origin products to Japan under the OOAP, please contact NZFSA using the email contact at the bottom of this page.

Under this option, Japan recognises New Zealand's official organic assurance programme (OOAP) (including the Technical Rules version 6.2) as equivalent to their regulations. This version can be obtained by contacting NZFSA at the email contact below.

Products exported to Japan under the OOAP can not currently be produced using version 7 of the Technical Rules. This is the version available on the NZFSA website. If you export under this option you cannot apply the JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standards) organic mark in New Zealand. The JAS organic mark can be applied in Japan. You must have an export certificate from NZFSA for each consignment of organic products you export.

Apply for an export certificate by completing the request form below.

Export through your third party agency

You can use this option for all organic plant and livestock products. This option is independent of the official organic assurance programme (OOAP) and is not in any way related.

Your TPA must be a registered foreign certification organisation with Japan MAFF. If you export under this option you can apply the JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standards) organic mark in New Zealand.

If you export to Japan under this option, contact your third party agency (TPA) directly.
