Proposed legislative changes to the FSANZ Act

The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (the Department) has developed a consultation paper to seek the views of stakeholders on the impacts of proposed changes to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (the Act). Submissions and feedback will be used to shape the final legislative amendments for consideration by the Australian Parliament.

Many of the recommendations contained in the consultation document have already been the subject of consultation and have been agreed in principle by the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council. The Department is now examining the means by which to implement the recommendations that require amendments to the Act.

As part of the preparation of the legislative package for consideration the Department will be preparing a Regulation Impact Statement detailing the impacts of any significant changes to the legislation. The Department will be utilising information received through previous consultation on the issues but will also be pleased to receive any further input.
