Food Regulation Discussion Paper

The Food Regulation Standing Committee (FRSC) is responsible for providing policy advice to the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council and comprises government representatives from New Zealand, Australia and all States and Territories.

As part of its responsibilities, FRSC recently commissioned a review to seek advice on ways to expedite the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) assessment and approval process and ensure appropriate protections for confidential commercial information, while protecting the public interest in accordance with the object of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (the Act) and the prescribed objectives of FSANZ.

To this end, a Discussion Paper (entitled Food Regulation Discussion Paper, Review of FSANZ assessment and approval processes and treatment of confidential commercial information) has been prepared. This Discussion Paper will be available at the link below from 20 June 2005 on this website. The Discussion Paper may also be obtained after 20 June 2005 by calling (04) 463 3402 in New Zealand or (02) 6289 5128 in Australia.

FRSC is seeking feedback on the Discussion Paper including the issues and options canvassed, through both written submissions and public forums to be held in New Zealand and Australia.
