NZFSA Policy Statements
A New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) Policy Statement is a formal statement outlining the Authority’s considered position on a particular matter. All NZFSA Policy Statements are directly linked to NZFSA’s mandate and overarching outcomes.
NZFSA’s Mandate
NZFSA’s mandate is to protect consumers by providing an effective food regulatory programme covering food produced and consumed in New Zealand as well as imports and exports of food products.
NZFSA’s Overarching Outcomes
NZFSA is responsible for managing the regulatory framework that underpins the safety and suitability of all food for sale in, and exported, from New Zealand.
NZFSA has three overarching outcomes:
• Improved safe and suitable food
• Improved business opportunities through safe and suitable food
• Consumer food practices and choices that support better health
These outcomes, set out and described in the Authority’s Statement of Intent, guide the application of NZFSA’s risk management framework, which is in place to ensure any response to, or regulation of, food production, processing, transport, handling and retail, related to food safety and suitability is proportionate to the risk a situation presents.
