Response to Grocers Review (DFR) March 2006
Dear Sir,
We agree with your editorial of March 2006 that communication of food issues must be done clearly, accurately and with a full range of the facts.
Unfortunately, one small part of it requires correction. While you were “steaming” over the reports that NZFSA was planning to regulate sausage sizzles out of existence, so were we. Anyone who has taken the time to read the Domestic Food Review (DFR) discussion papers or media releases and other information will note that this has never been proposed by us, and we have gone to great lengths to make that clear. On the bright side, an old maxim (any publicity is good publicity) has proved true in that more people did get to know about the Review and we have been pleased with the number attending workshops and making submissions. Thankfully, they have generally focussed on the real issues raised in the discussion papers and the current Position Paper, including Food Control Plans, education and training, performance monitoring.
We encourage your readers to get involved. Submissions on the Position Paper proposals close on 28 April. Hardcopies are available from NZFSA by calling 0800 693 721, emailing info@nzfsa.govt.nz, or can be downloaded (along with a wealth of other relevant material) from www.nzfsa.govt.nz.
