Dairy Maintenance Compounds
Regulation 24(1)(d) of the Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005 requires that detergents, sanitisers and other compounds used in farm dairies to clean, sanitise or maintain the milking plant be approved by the Director-General.
In addition, RMP operators must ensure that all maintenance compounds used are suitable for their intended use. To assist, regulation 30 of the Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005 allows the Director-General to recognise the suitability for use of maintenance compounds, with or without conditions imposed.
There is no mandatory requirement for maintenance compounds other than those used to maintain farm dairy milking plants to be approved or recognised by the Director-General, but doing so will provide clarity on NZFSA acceptability and thereby assist dairy risk management programme operators, evaluators and verifiers.
Register
The register of approved and recognised dairy maintenance compounds identifies the maintenance compounds that have been approved or recognised in accordance with the provisions of regulation 30 of the Animal Products (Dairy) Regulations 2005.
Approved dairy maintenance compound refers to products that have been approved for use in farm dairies to clean, sanitise or maintain the milking plant (including the bulk milk tank) and as such meet the requirements of regulation 24(1)(d).
Recognised dairy maintenance compound refers to products that have been recognised as suitable for the purpose identified.
Conditions on use may be applied to a particular product to ensure appropriate use.
Maintenance compounds used to clean, sanitise or otherwise maintain equipment and facilities are typically part of an integrated, documented programme. As such consideration of individual products is made on the basis of their use as per the label instruction within the context of an overall programme.
