Science

As the public demand for accountability for food safety increases, so too does the level of scientific research required. That research requires both domestic and international input and the Science Group has established new partnerships to enable it to provide the best information possible.

The Science Group plays a key role providing both strategic and scientific information for the development of policy in the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. Scientific research plays a pivotal role in identifying, assessing and managing potential food borne risks to human health.

Reports on research and development programmes that ensure the continued scientific validity, competitiveness, and cost-effectiveness of New Zealand's food safety and regulatory assurance programmes. The NZFSA Science Group has a goal of developing a single metric of risk ranking that can be applied to both chemical and microbiological hazards and is pertinent to the varied risk ranking needs of the NZFSA. This is an ongoing, iterative process involving several projects.
NZFSA aims to always keep abreast of international developments in food safety and food quality and to share that information within the authority and with its stakeholders.
- Genetically Modified Foods Food industry associations, food businesses and food safety consultants can use this information to help understand the micro organisms they need to control in their, or their client's, food processes.
Risk Profiles provide contextual and background information relevant to a food/hazard combination so that risk managers can make decisions and, if necessary, take further action.
Submissions in support of New Zealand contentions that food safety outcomes from regulatory programmes designed specifically for New Zealand processing conditions are equivalent to those of regulatory programmes mandated by our export markets.
The annual reports describe quantitative and qualitative outcomes of all science projects undertaken as part of the ESR/NZFSA science services contract.
Presentations from NZFSA science workshops and seminars are available here.
