Agricultural Compounds to be tested for in 2003/04 New Zealand Total Diet Survey

The 2003/04 New Zealand Total Diet Survey (NZTDS) will analyse the foods contained in the 2003/04 NZTDS Food List for a range of agricultural compounds. Testing will be undertaken for pesticides, dithiocarbamate and acid herbicide compounds by way of three separate screens. The screens for pesticides and acid herbicides are multi-residue screens, in that each compound in the screen can be separately quantified. The dithiocarbamate (DTC) screen analyses for CS2, a breakdown product of DTCs, and does not differentiate which individual DTC in the screen produced the result.

Screens are a ’package deal' in that each screen contains a specific set of compounds. While the exact make-up of screens does change over time the addition or deletion of any particular compound from a specific screen and the related validation of methods and calibration of equipment etc means that short term or one-off changes are not practicable.

The pesticides, dithiocarbamate and acid herbicide compounds that are to be screened in the 2003/04 NZTDS are listed below.

Who's doing the testing?

ESR is subcontracting the provision of the multi-residue agricultural compound testing to be undertaken in the 2003/04 NZTDS. The analytical providers selected were chosen based on the following criteria:-

  • their reputation in the field;
  • their experience with the analytes in question in the wide range of food matrices involved in the NZTDS;
  • the status of accreditation of the laboratory and methods;
  • an inspection of their laboratory facilities;
  • previous contracts of a similar size and complexity;
  • their ability to deliver timely and robust results;
  • the accuracy of methods as demonstrated by results from international collaborative proficiency programmes for these types of compounds in varied food matrices;
  • the quality assurance/quality control system they have in place;
  • their equipment and back-up equipment;
  • the breadth and significance of the compounds in their pesticide screen;
  • the limits of detection of the pesticides involved;
  • price.
