Export requirements for non-New Zealand grape wine, fruit or vegetable wine, cider or mead
You must comply with the general duties of all wine exporters, and any export requirements specific to the market you are exporting to.
General duties of all wine exporters
In addition, if you export wine other than New Zealand grape wine, you must register annually with NZFSA.
This registration applies to exporters of:
• kiwifruit wine
• fruit wine (other than New Zealand grape wine)
• vegetable wine
• cider
• mead
• grape wine made from grapes not grown in New Zealand.
Wine exporter register
All registered exporters are listed on the wine export register.
The Wine Act 2003 requires NZFSA to keep and maintain a register of exporters for the following purposes:
• to enable members of the public, including persons and businesses operating under the Wine Act, to know who is authorised to export wine of a kind that is not subject to export eligibility requirements
• to facilitate the ability of NZFSA to:
- ensure that all exported wine is fit for its intended purpose
- advise exporters of overseas market access requirements, and of developments in market access issues
- to safeguard official assurances for entry of wine into overseas markets, including in emergency situations
• to facilitate the compliance, audit, and other supporting and administrative functions of the NZFSA under the Wine Act.
How to register
Complete the registration application form below and return it to NZFSA with the annual registration fee. Fees are stated on the application form.
Your registration application should be processed within five working days. You will be allocated a confidential unique identifier. This is used by New Zealand Customs Service to verify that non-New Zealand grape wine is only exported by registered wine exporters.
You need to be registered before you start exporting unless you qualify for an exemption.
Your registration will last for a year. After a year it will need to be renewed. If you do not re-register, but continue to export wine, you may be in breach of the Wine Act 2003.
Renewal is your responsibility. NZFSA will endeavour to send you a reminder letter before your registration expires. However, non-receipt of a reminder letter cannot be used to excuse failure to renew a registration.
