Laboratories for export wine analysis

Some countries require wine to be accompanied by a laboratory report confirming that its composition meets certain requirements. For example, European Union (EU) countries require a VI-1 certificate. This certificate includes an analysis report that confirms the wine meets EU requirements. For NZFSA to issue a V1-1 certificate, the analysis of the wine must be performed by a recognised laboratory.

Recognised laboratories that provide analysis of wine to support the issue of VI-1 certificates must also be listed with the European Commission (EC). Once a laboratory is recognised, NZFSA notifies the EC so that they can update the list and notify Member States.

For more information about export documentation required for different export markets see the link below.

New recognised laboratories will be able to provide export wine analysis services from 1 October 2009.

To be recognised, a laboratory must:

be accredited, or working toward accreditation, to ISO 17025

be assessed by the accreditation body annually from the date of recognition

You need to apply to IANZ for accreditation as soon as possible, as accreditation could take three to six months.

Wine analysis test method approval

NZFSA needs to have confidence in any recognised laboratory test results to be able to provide official assurances. Approval of test methods used for the analysis of wine helps with this.

The guidelines below list the criteria for evaluating and approving test methods.
