Wine - Laboratories

If you make wine using your own water supply or if you export wine, you need to meet certain requirements under the Wine Act 2003. Laboratory testing is used to check that these requirements have been met.

Laboratories - clean water testing

If you make wine using your own water supply, you must get your water tested annually to ensure it is ‘clean’. Water testing must be done by an approved laboratory.

To find approved laboratories for water testing, see the ‘water tests’ section in the ‘Making wine’ page.

Recognised laboratories - export wine testing

If you export wine, some countries require a laboratory report confirming the wine’s composition meets their requirements. Testing must be performed by a recognised laboratory.

Become a recognised lab

NZFSA is looking to recognise laboratories for export wine testing. If your laboratory is interested, apply to NZFSA. Read more about becoming recognised to perform export wine analysis in the link below.
