Wine Standards Management Plans (WSMP)
This page contains information to help winemakers develop their wine standards management plan.
A wine standards management plan (WSMP) is a set of documents that demonstrates how a winemaker is meeting their obligations under the Wine Act 2003, and includes
• NZFSA-approved WSMP Codes of Practice
• WSMP outline
• generic HACCP plans for winemaking
• winemaker’s own records
Almost all winemakers need to have a WSMP, including contract winemakers, independent bottlers, and mobile bottlers. Winemakers should submit their WSMP to the NZFSA for registration by 1 September 2008 to ensure they meet the legislative deadline.
There is one exception to the WSMP requirements. Winemakers who make less than 10,000L wine/year and who sell all of their wine in New Zealand are eligible for a wine standards management plan exemption. These winemakers will simply need to notify the NZFSA (using exemption notification form WA3) that they meet the exemption criteria. However, all exempt winemakers still need to follow the standards and requirements of the Wine Act 2003, and the easiest way to do that is to follow an NZFSA-approved WSMP Code of Practice.
